Actis Acquires Large-Scale Battery Storage Projects in Poland

Actis has acquired two large-scale battery energy storage projects in Poland, totaling 244 MW/1,141 MWh. These projects, located in Kozienice and Trzebinia, are backed by 17-year capacity market contracts. The investment supports Poland's energy transition, which involves phasing out coal and increasing renewable energy and grid flexibility. This acquisition reflects a broader trend of growing investments in battery storage across Central and Eastern Europe.

Actis, an investor focused on sustainable infrastructure in growth markets, has acquired two significant battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Poland. These projects, sourced from DRI, boast a combined capacity of 244 MW and a storage capability of 1,141 MWh, offering durations exceeding four hours.

The first project is located in Kozienice, with a capacity of 112 MW/518 MWh, and is ready for construction. The second project, in Trzebinia, has a capacity of 132 MW/623 MWh. The acquisition of the Trzebinia project is expected to be finalized once it becomes operational. Both projects are supported by 17-year inflation-indexed capacity market contracts.

Actis' investment aligns with Poland's ongoing energy transition. The nation plans to retire approximately 18 GW of coal-fired power capacity by 2040, while simultaneously adding 50 GW of renewable energy and 14 GW of gas-fired capacity. According to Jaroslava Korpanec, Head of Central & Eastern Europe at Actis, the CEE region has historically been underinvested. She emphasized the critical need for decarbonization and independent energy supply, particularly in Poland, which is a major yet carbon-intensive power market. These projects are set to provide the necessary grid flexibility to support Poland's transition from coal to renewables, enhancing its energy competitiveness and resilience.

This transaction contributes to Actis' broader goal of achieving 1.5 GW in wind, solar, and BESS capacity across Central & Eastern Europe. The market for battery storage project acquisitions is experiencing robust growth. A recent Mercom report for the first half of 2026 indicates a sharp acceleration in acquisition activity. During this period, approximately 14 GW of battery storage capacity changed hands across 63 transactions, a significant increase from 6.1 GW in 31 transactions during the same period in 2025. Another example of this trend is ENGIE Zielona Energia's acquisition in September of a 438 MW/876 MWh battery energy storage project.
