Andhra Pradesh Issues 5,000 MWh BESS Tender for Four-Hour Storage
APTRANSCO has issued a tender for the development of 1,250 MW/5,000 MWh of standalone battery energy storage in Andhra Pradesh, India. This large-scale BESS project will provide four hours of storage capacity and will be implemented under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model. Bids for this tender are due by November 23, 2026.
The Andhra Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (APTRANSCO) has launched a tender for the development of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. This procurement aims to select developers for the establishment of 1,250 MW/5,000 MWh of standalone battery energy storage capacity, designed to provide four hours of storage. Interested parties are invited to submit their bids until November 23, 2026.
The project will be implemented under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, through which Andhra Pradesh seeks to ensure power availability on demand. The total capacity will be distributed across three strategic locations within the state. The Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (RTPP) is designated for a proposed capacity of 500 MW/2,000 MWh, connecting to a 400 kV substation. The Talaricheruvu Renewable Energy (RE) project will encompass 250 MW/1,000 MWh, linking to the 400 kV Pooling Substation 1. The remaining 500 MW/2,000 MWh is allocated to the NP Kunta RE project, which will connect to the 220 kV NP Kunta Pooling Substation.
In addition to the specified capacities, APPCC retains the option to procure up to 25% additional BESS capacity for each project. This could result in a maximum additional capacity of 125 MW/500 MWh for Project 1 and Project 3, and 50 MW/200 MWh for Project 2. The BESS developer will be responsible for developing all necessary infrastructure for power evacuation and project interconnection, including the interconnection/delivery point. Securing land access necessitates developers entering into a Right-of-Use arrangement with the land-owning entity, incurring an annual lease charge of ₹1 per acre.
