The new project is projected to contribute 12 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of annual cell production capacity. Its implementation is slated for the second half of 2027, contingent on securing the necessary financing. The production lines are designed to be versatile, capable of manufacturing both sodium-ion and lithium-ion cells, with the final chemistry choice to be guided by market conditions and customer demand. This comprehensive project will encompass cell manufacturing, as well as module and battery pack integration. Development will proceed in phases, considering funding availability, customer demand, and project readiness.
Separately, CBAK Energy aims to add an additional 6 GWh of annual cell capacity to its existing Nanjing facility by the end of 2026. This expansion is intended to meet the robust demand for its large cylindrical Model 60150 cells. The current facility possesses a 4.5 GWh annual capacity for Model 32140 cells. With the planned 6 GWh addition, the total annual cell capacity at this site would reach 10.5 GWh. The company is considering two Model 60150 production lines for this expansion but may adjust to one Model 32140 line and one Model 60150 line, depending on evolving market conditions.
CBAK Energy's sodium-ion cell samples are currently undergoing customer testing across various applications, including residential and portable energy storage, electric mobility, specialty vehicles, start-stop systems, and backup power. Zhiguang Hu, Chief Executive Officer of CBAK Energy, stated that the 6 GWh expansion would more than double the annual cell capacity at their existing Nanjing facility, helping to satisfy strong demand for large cylindrical cells. He further noted that the flexibility to produce both sodium-ion and lithium-ion cells would provide the company with more options to serve customers as demand evolves in both markets.
