Hithium Launches Innovative 4 MWh Sodium-Ion BESS with New Cell Technology

Chinese battery manufacturer Hithium has made a significant stride in the development of sodium-ion energy storage systems with the introduction of its ∞Power N4.0MWh. This advanced system, boasting a 4 MWh capacity, utilizes the new, high-capacity ∞Cell N785Ah sodium-ion battery. This launch signifies a substantial increase in capacity achieved in less than two years.
Hithium has indicated that its initial focus will be on utility-scale energy storage, with plans to expand the technology into commercial, industrial, and residential applications. This expansion aims to provide more battery chemistry options for businesses and households alike. Full-scale production and delivery are slated for 2027, leveraging existing lithium-ion manufacturing lines. The ∞Cell N785Ah cell features a 20,000-cycle service life and supports storage durations ranging from 2 to 8 hours. It is fully compatible with Hithium's 1,000 Ah lithium-ion manufacturing platform, which facilitates production scale-up. According to Nazar Yi, Chief Technology Officer for Hithium, energy storage technologies must overcome two barriers for widespread adoption: affordability and availability. Hithium previously launched the ∞Cell N162Ah in December 2024, which was then described as the first sodium-ion battery specifically designed for utility-scale energy storage.
The new 4 MWh sodium-based ESS design incorporates a stacked-cell architecture, reducing the required station footprint by 30%. The system includes a dedicated Battery Management System (BMS) with a State of Charge (SOC) estimation accuracy of less than 2.5% and is compatible with Power Conversion Systems (PCS) ranging from 800–1500V. The utilization of the PCS rated-power is more than 20% higher compared to Hithium's first-generation sodium-ion ESS.
An innovative thermal management approach is employed through a hybrid air-liquid cooling system, achieving a 24-hour comprehensive efficiency exceeding 88%. This thermal management is further optimized by using weather data to determine the cooling strategy, which can reduce auxiliary power consumption by 30% and standby auxiliary power consumption by 50%. Aileen Wang, Director of the Battery Research Institute, emphasized the company's long-term commitment: "30 years means 10,950 days of validation, a long-term commitment to our customers." Hithium is targeting a levelized cost of storage (LCOS) of RMB 0.1 per kWh, approximately USD 1.5 cents per kWh.
