NLC India Renewables Secures Significant BESS Tender in Haryana

NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL) has won a tender for a substantial 265 MW/530 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Haryana, India. The project was awarded at a tariff of Rs. 2.35 lakh per MW per month.
SJVN, acting as the Renewable Energy Implementing Agency (REIA) for Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (UHBVNL), issued the tender. The project, announced in July and awarded a month later, comprises two components: 250 MW/500 MWh and 15 MW/30 MWh. NIRL is required to provide the BESS on an "on-demand" basis to meet energy requirements during peak and off-peak hours.
The awarded tariff of Rs. 2.35 lakh/MW/month is higher than the Rs. 1.97 lakh/MW/month tariff SJVN previously awarded for a 250 MW/500 MWh BESS project in Panipat earlier this year. However, it is relatively lower than the tariffs discovered in MSEDCL's BESS tender, where projects were awarded at Rs. 2.38 lakh/MW/month and Rs. 2.40 lakh/MW/month.
A critical aspect of this project is the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) available for the 15 MW/30 MWh component. This funding can amount to up to Rs. 18 lakh per MWh or 30% of the capital cost, whichever is applicable. The VGF, a one-time, non-recurring expenditure, is fully funded through the Power System Development Fund (PSDF) and a central grant under the State Component of the VGF Scheme.
This development underscores the increasing investments in large-scale energy storage in India to ensure grid stability.
