German Startup Revolta AG Secures Grant for Grid-Charging Sodium-Ion Home Battery

German startup Revolta AG has received funding for the development of a sodium-ion home battery designed for direct grid connection. This system targets rental apartments without solar panels, charging when electricity prices are low and feeding power back during peak prices. New German grid regulations now support the business case for such grid-charging energy storage solutions.

German startup Revolta AG has secured funding from the state of Hesse for the development of an innovative sodium-ion home battery. This project, titled 'Highly Efficient AC Salt Battery', focuses on an alternating current (AC) battery system designed for direct grid connection. It is specifically aimed at smaller rental apartments that do not have their own photovoltaic (PV) systems, offering them a new option for energy storage.

Revolta AG's system is intended to charge when electricity prices and grid fees are low, and to feed power back into the grid when prices are higher. A key feature of this battery is its use of sodium-ion cells, which do not require lithium or cobalt. The funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) includes a co-financing rate of 40% of the eligible costs of 660,545 euros, amounting to approximately 264,200 euros. The project is scheduled to run from August 1, 2026, to December 31, 2029.

The business case for grid-charging home batteries in Germany has recently improved. On October 1, the German grid regulator adopted new rules allowing storage systems to draw power from the grid and feed it back later with lower levies and grid fees. These regulations also apply to storage systems without their own generation, further boosting the application of Revolta's system.

Frankfurt-based Revolta AG already launched a high-voltage sodium-ion home battery for households with PV systems in July. Additionally, the company holds a grant of 124,940 euros from Germany's Federal Environmental Foundation for another AC battery project, running from September 2025 to September 2027. The ERDF is also supporting sodium-ion battery manufacturing in Germany; for instance, Moll Batterien received 22.17 million euros in public funding, including 2.52 million euros from the ERDF, for a planned 1 GWh sodium-ion battery plant in Lichtenfels, Bavaria.
