R.Power's large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Scornicești, Romania, has entered its final construction phase. This project, boasting a capacity of 127 MW and 254 MWh, is poised to become one of the largest energy storage systems in Central and Eastern Europe. It is situated in Olt County, close to the border with Bulgaria.
Construction, which commenced in spring 2026, is being managed by EPC contractor Parapet in collaboration with R.Power's in-house EPC management team. Foundations have been laid, and all 46 battery containers, alongside 23 containerized MV transformers, have been deployed. The project is currently being prepared for connection to Romania's Transelectrica and the high-voltage national transmission grid.
A €46 million financing package for the project was secured in June 2026. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) contributed €44 million through investment and bridge financing. Additionally, the Polish development bank Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) issued a €2.3 million bank guarantee to secure the long-term optimization contract with regional trading partner GEN-I. According to EBRD information, the total project cost amounted to €67 million.
The project is co-owned through a joint venture with France's Eiffel Investment Group, following the sale of a 49.99% stake to Eiffel in October of the previous year. The BESS project is anticipated to commence operations in the coming months. R.Power's current BESS portfolio, encompassing operational and under-construction assets, stands at 0.9 GW / 3 GWh, with an additional 0.7 GW / 2.8 GWh of commercialized, ready-to-build projects.
