Tesla Unveils Redesigned Roadster; Performance Version Reservations Open in China
Tesla has presented the redesigned second-generation Roadster sports car. Reservations for the Performance version are now available in China. Production of this model is targeted for 2028.
Tesla has unveiled the second generation of its Roadster sports car, with its Chinese website now accepting reservations for the Performance version. The manufacturer aims for production of this vehicle to commence in 2028.
Customers in China wishing to place a reservation are required to pay a deposit of 332,000 yuan (approximately $49,390). This deposit is fully refundable. The Chinese website mandates payment within ten days to complete the reservation. In comparison, the US website requires an initial payment of $5,000, followed by an additional $45,000 within ten days, totaling $50,000.
The unveiling event took place on October 15 at SpaceX's testing facility in McGregor, Texas. During the demonstration, a vehicle utilizing suction fans and cold-gas thrusters ascended a curved ramp, performed an aerial flip, and landed. It also successfully jumped over a line of Tesla vehicles, including the Semi truck.
The Performance version, available for reservation in China, accommodates two occupants and features active aerodynamics along with a multi-mode suction system. This model achieves an acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h (0-60 mph) in under 1.6 seconds. According to the Chinese website, this configuration is suitable for public roads.
Upgrade packages, such as the Thrust and Rocket options, are also available for the Performance version. The Thrust package maintains the two-seat layout and incorporates rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters, enabling a 0 to 96 km/h acceleration in under 0.9 seconds. The Rocket package features a single-seat configuration and employs thrusters positioned around the vehicle to generate upward thrust and control its orientation in the air. This package is available by invitation only.
The cold-gas thrusters, developed collaboratively by Tesla and SpaceX engineers, produce thrust by releasing pressurized gas without combustion. The suction fans beneath the car enhance downforce and grip. The Roadster serves as a platform for Tesla to showcase its engineering capabilities and attract attention to the brand.
