A bidding process has been initiated by the Tunisian national utility, Société tunisienne de l’électricité et du gaz (STEG), for the development of a 50 MW solar PV plant. A crucial component of this project is the inclusion of 10 MW/20 MWh of battery storage capacity. The selected developers will be tasked with building the entire facility, along with the associated high-voltage grid infrastructure and transmission lines.

The project site is designated for Tataouine, located in southern Tunisia. Interested parties are invited to submit their project proposals, with the deadline set for December 10.

This tender builds upon Tunisia's ongoing efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity. Earlier in March, the Tunisian Ministry of Energy and Mines initiated a tender for a larger 300 MW solar farm, which was to be coupled with a 150 MW/540 MWh battery energy storage system. These projects highlight the increasing emphasis on integrating solar power with battery storage to ensure grid stability and optimize energy supply.

According to the Africa Solar Industry Association's (AFSIA) project database, Tunisia currently has 728.8 MW of operational solar capacity. With Amea Power's plant now online, the country is progressing towards the 1 GW benchmark. Furthermore, in March, the Tunisian government granted licenses for four new utility-scale projects totaling 500 MW. These projects were chosen as part of a broader 1.7 GW renewable energy tender.
