Development of Large-Scale BESS Projects in Victoria, Australia
Two significant battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Australian state of Victoria, developed by Valent Energy and Akaysha Energy, have reached major milestones. Valent Energy's Mornington BESS has achieved its full 240MW capacity, while Akaysha Energy's Elaine BESS, utilizing Tesla technology, completed the installation of its second high-voltage transformer. These projects contribute significantly to grid stability and renewable energy integration within Australia's electricity market.
Two significant battery storage projects in the Australian state of Victoria have recently achieved important development milestones. Both projects are connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM) and contribute to the region's energy security.
Mornington BESS by Valent Energy
Valent Energy has completed the final hold point for its Mornington Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This system now boasts a nameplate capacity of 240MW, adding substantial dispatchable capacity to Victoria's transmission network. The project, with a storage capacity of 590MWh, commenced testing and commissioning in March 2026 and has now reached full operational output. The Mornington BESS is situated approximately 55 kilometers south-southeast of Melbourne's central business district, adjacent to AusNet Services' Tyabb Terminal Station.
It utilizes CATL battery technology combined with Power Electronics inverters, with ACLE Services serving as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor. The project was a successful participant in the Australian government's Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) and is part of Valent Energy's broader Australian portfolio, which encompasses over 1.6GW of battery storage projects.
Elaine BESS by Akaysha Energy
Akaysha Energy has also made progress with its Elaine BESS. The delivery and installation of the second high-voltage transformer mark a significant step towards the project's completion. All Megapacks, step-up transformers, ring main units, and control buildings are now in place on the eastern side of the site. This project, with a capacity of 311MW and 1,244MWh of storage, secured AU$460 million in non-recourse construction financing in November 2025 from a syndicate of banks.
Tesla is supplying the battery technology for this project, with Consolidated Power Projects acting as the EPC contractor. Located in southwest Victoria, the Elaine BESS will connect to the NEM via existing transmission infrastructure. It is designed to help manage transmission outage risks while supporting the integration of wind and solar generation. Akaysha Energy, backed by BlackRock, considers Elaine BESS its fifth project in Australia. Their project pipeline also includes the Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales, an 850MW/1,680MWh facility. The Waratah Super Battery briefly reached its full 850MW rated output on September 7, after experiencing constrained output for most of the preceding year due to a transformer failure.
These advancements highlight the increasing role of large-scale battery storage in Australia's energy transition.
