Global BESS Deployment Reaches 21GWh in August, Europe Shows Strong Growth
Nearly 21 GWh of grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) were deployed globally in August. China led the deployment with 61%, followed by Saudi Arabia (19%) and Europe (11%). The year-to-date commissioned BESS capacity reached 177 GWh, a 35% increase year-on-year. Europe showed remarkable growth, commissioning three times the capacity in the first eight months compared to 2025, including projects in Belgium and Scotland.
Global deployment of grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) saw significant activity in August, with nearly 21 gigawatt-hours (GWh) coming online worldwide. According to the latest figures from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, the total commissioned capacity amounted to 6,516 megawatts (MW) and 20,855 megawatt-hours (MWh).
China accounted for the largest share of this deployment, representing approximately 61% of the total capacity. Saudi Arabia followed with 19%, while Europe contributed 11% of the new BESS capacity. South and Central America collectively added nearly 5% to the global implementation.
This monthly activity brings the year-to-date (YTD) commissioned BESS capacity to 177 GWh, marking an impressive 35% increase compared to the same period last year. Europe, in particular, has substantially ramped up its efforts, commissioning three times the amount of capacity in the first eight months of this year than it did in the corresponding period in 2025, reaching a total of 18.2 GWh. In August alone, Europe saw 914 MW/2,290 MWh come online, including a 150 MW/600 MWh project by EDF in Belgium and a 500 MW/1 GWh project by CIP in Scotland.
Saudi Arabia's contribution primarily consisted of two 500 MW/2 GWh projects, namely the Tabuk and Ha’il projects, which were supplied by China-based Hithium. Meanwhile, the figures for South and Central America included projects brought online by Engie during the month. In contrast, North America experienced its quietest month of the year, with only 100 MW/400 MWh of new capacity, mainly comprising EDP’s Sandrini project in California.
In China, notable deployments included two 500 MW/2 GWh projects in Inner Mongolia, with StarCharge acting as the integrator, and a 300 MW/1.2 GWh project in Hebei, integrated by Sungrow. These statistics underscore the dynamic growth and widespread geographical distribution of large-scale energy storage solutions globally.
