India is taking significant strides in energy storage with the launch of two substantial tenders for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Both the state-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) and Cochin Shipyard Limited have recently issued calls for the development of battery parks, underscoring the nation's growing focus on grid stabilization and renewable energy integration.
Coal India has initiated a tender for the realization of 80 MW/320 MWh of standalone BESS capacity, to be distributed across four locations in the state of Odisha. The company is seeking an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) partner who will be responsible for the entire process, from design and construction to commissioning. Furthermore, the scope of work includes comprehensive operations and maintenance (O&M) for fifteen years post-commissioning. CIL's subsidiary, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), acts as the developer and has already entered into a Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with GRIDCO Limited, the local power utility. The projects will be developed on a 'build-own-operate' (BOO) basis and are divided into two clusters, each with a capacity of 40 MW/160 MWh. Each individual project within these clusters will amount to 20 MW/80 MWh. The locations Padampur and Bolangir will form Cluster 1, while Bhatli and Basta will constitute Cluster 2. Project completion is scheduled within eleven months from the date of the letter of award. These initiatives align with Coal India's broader ambition to develop a total of 5 GW of renewable energy capacity by fiscal year 2028-2029, utilizing available land and areas with significant solar potential. Bids for this tender, launched on September 15, 2026, will be accepted until October 9, 2026.
Separately, Cochin Shipyard Limited has published a tender for a 10 MW/20 MWh grid-connected BESS project. This project will be implemented at the shipyard itself and is a turnkey contract. Prospective bidders are required to conduct a mandatory preliminary site study on September 29, 2026. Cochin Shipyard's call was also launched on September 15, 2026, with a final submission deadline for bids on October 13, 2026.
The increasing interest in battery storage across India is clearly evident. Utilities are deploying these systems to balance the electricity grid, manage peak demand, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. According to Mercom, India's cumulative BESS capacity reached a total of 9.3 GWh by the end of June 2026, following an addition of 8.2 GWh in the first half of 2026. These new tenders confirm the dynamic development of the energy storage sector in the country.
