Nvidia Launches BESS Qualification Program for AI Data Centers

Nvidia has introduced a new "DSX Ready" qualification program for battery energy storage systems (BESS) crucial for AI data centers. This initiative, which defines BESS performance for AI factories, features Tesla, LG Energy Solution, and Hitachi Energy as the first qualified partners. It underscores the growing demand for robust energy storage solutions within rapidly evolving AI infrastructure.

Nvidia, globally recognized for its specialized chips underpinning artificial intelligence (AI), is expanding its influence into the infrastructure of AI data centers. The company has launched a new “DSX Ready” qualification program, specifically for products and solutions that meet the requirements for AI factory infrastructure. The initial focus of this program is on battery energy storage systems (BESS) and cooling products.

The DSX Ready program is part of Nvidia’s broader DSX branding and platform, which focuses on design, simulation, and operations within these AI factories. Its objective is to establish a common qualification framework for power systems and liquid-cooling infrastructure, with requirements tailored to each technology. For BESS, the qualification process involves a thorough review of the power conversion system (PCS) behavior at the AC terminals. This includes dynamic active and reactive power response, current limiting, ride-through capability, islanded operation, and black-start functionality. Partners are required to provide extensive evidence, including raw time-series data and test configurations, alongside documentation of applicable industrial standards and regulatory certifications.

Upon the program's launch, three BESS providers have been qualified: Hitachi Energy, LG Energy Solution, and Tesla. Hitachi Energy’s BESS, featuring its WD4 PCS, offers a 5 MW AC output and a 10 MWh capacity. LG Energy Solution is qualified with its LGES Vertech JF2 2HR/4HR AC Link, also providing a 5 MW AC output and a 10 MWh capacity. Tesla’s Megapack 2XL has been qualified with a 1.93 MW AC output and a 3.85 MWh capacity.

This qualification highlights the critical role BESS plays in the power infrastructure of AI data centers, supporting functions such as load buffering, demand response, and continuous operation through grid disturbances. According to Chang Beom Kang, head of the ESS battery division at LG Energy Solution, being selected validates the strength and competitiveness of their BESS products. Marco Berardi, head of grid & power quality solutions at Hitachi Energy, adds that this recognition reinforces Hitachi Energy’s position at the forefront of AI factory electrification. Tesla had not provided an official comment at the time of writing.
