POWERGRID Launches Tender for Large-Scale 750 MWh BESS Project in Telangana
POWERGRID has issued a tender for the realization of a 750 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Telangana, India. The project encompasses the full cycle from design through 15 years of maintenance. Interested parties can submit their bids until October 19, 2026.
The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has initiated a tender process for the development of a substantial battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Indian state of Telangana. This project involves a system with a capacity of 187.5 MW and 750 MWh, designed for a four-hour discharge duration. The BESS will be strategically situated at the Maheswaram 400/220 kV substation, a key location for integration into the regional electricity grid. The implementation of such a system is vital for managing fluctuations in energy supply and demand, thereby contributing to overall grid stability.
The procurement is structured as a tariff-based competitive bidding process, indicating that pricing will be a significant factor in the selection. This is further supported by viability gap funding through the power system development fund, a mechanism designed to enhance the financial feasibility of infrastructure projects. The chosen contractor will bear comprehensive responsibility for the entire project lifecycle, encompassing initial design, component supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the BESS. Following successful completion, the scope of work also includes the operation and extensive maintenance of the system. Project completion is anticipated within fifteen months after the contract award, with the contractor providing maintenance for a period of fifteen years, ensuring long-term commitment.
POWERGRID intends to pre-select a qualified bidder, specifically the party with the lowest evaluation, to collaborate as a partner in TGGENCO's tariff-based bidding process. This process operates under a 'build-own-operate' (BOO) model, where the partner constructs, owns, and operates the system. A crucial condition stipulates that the pre-selected bidder is prohibited from participating independently or through its affiliates, partnerships, or consortiums in TGGENCO's selection process for the identical project. Prospective bidders are required to submit their online bids by October 19, 2026. Access to the complete bidding documents necessitates the submission of required documents by October 17, 2026, demanding prompt action from potential entrants.
