RWE Invests in Large-Scale 400 MW Battery Park in Moerdijk

RWE is constructing a large-scale 400 MW/1,100 MWh battery energy storage system in Moerdijk, Netherlands, to alleviate grid congestion in North Brabant and support renewable energy integration. The lithium-ion system, expected to be operational by 2028, can meet the peak demand of 500,000 households and contributes to a resilient energy grid. This project aligns with RWE's global strategy to significantly expand its battery storage capacity.

RWE has made a final investment decision to construct a substantial battery energy storage system (BESS) at the site of its power plant in Moerdijk, Netherlands. This project, poised to be one of the largest in the country, will feature a capacity of 400 megawatts (MW) and 1,100 megawatt-hours (MWh). The installation will comprise 208 containers housing lithium-ion batteries, capable of delivering its full power for nearly three hours. Construction is slated to commence shortly, with commissioning anticipated in the second quarter of 2028.

Grid Congestion and Renewable Energy Integration

The primary objective of this battery park is to alleviate grid congestion in the North Brabant region. According to Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation SE, "battery storage plays a crucial role in building a resilient energy system." The system is designed to meet the evening peak demand of approximately 500,000 households and simultaneously absorb surplus electricity from the grid. Mark Lentjes, Regional Director for TenneT South Netherlands, highlighted that the large-scale battery will contribute to more efficient grid utilization, particularly due to its proximity to the 150,000-volt high-voltage substation Moerdijk-Noord.

The battery will connect to the national electricity grid via the existing substation at Moerdijk. Through capacity steering agreements with grid operator TenneT, the system will be deployed to mitigate bottlenecks in the region, thereby creating grid capacity for new connections. Furthermore, the BESS will support the integration of the OranjeWind offshore wind project by providing flexibility and balancing fluctuations in wind energy production. It is also capable of delivering advanced grid services, such as instantaneous reserve. A smaller synthetic inertia battery (7.5 MW/11 MWh) is already operational at the Moerdijk site.

RWE's Global Energy Storage Strategy

RWE is actively involved globally in the development and operation of battery storage systems. The company currently manages approximately 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of battery capacity worldwide, with an additional 3 GW under construction. In the Netherlands, besides the existing inertia battery in Moerdijk, RWE also operates a 35 MW/41 MWh battery at the Eemshaven power plant. Expanding battery storage capacity is a core component of RWE's growth strategy.
