A Brazilian couple embarked on a year-long journey through ten African countries in a motorhome that was almost entirely self-sufficient. This expedition, which commenced in August 2025, showcased the capabilities of mobile energy storage and solar power for an independent lifestyle. Throughout their travels, the vehicle required connection to the electricity grid only about three times, demonstrating a remarkable level of energy independence.

The motorhome's system integrates rooftop solar panels with lithium batteries and charging from the vehicle’s alternator while driving. Key equipment from Victron Energy, supplied with the involvement of Kamell Comércio Global, facilitates the integration of solar generation, battery storage, and energy management. This setup allowed the couple to operate various electrical appliances, including two air conditioners, two refrigerators, an electric stove, and satellite internet, even in remote areas lacking conventional electricity infrastructure.

The electrical installation includes three Victron Energy lithium batteries, each rated at 25.6 V and 200 Ah, providing a combined storage capacity of approximately 15.36 kWh. A 24 V, 5,000 VA MultiPlus-II inverter, a SmartSolar MPPT charge controller, and Orion charging units manage power conversion and charging. Monitoring equipment, such as a SmartShunt and a Cerbo GX communication hub, enables them to track the state of charge and energy supplied by the different sources.

According to Alê, one of the travelers, the system allows them to maintain a daily routine very similar to that of a conventional home, even in remote locations. The ability to monitor the system remotely via a smartphone proved particularly useful when the motorhome was parked. This provides insights into solar generation and battery status, helping to adjust consumption and prevent power shortages. The couple's experience underscores the potential of integrated solar power and battery storage for mobile off-grid applications.
