Sungrow PowerTitan 3.0 BESS Successfully Completes Large-Scale Fire Test

Sungrow announced its PowerTitan 3.0 battery energy storage system (BESS) successfully passed a large-scale fire test. The UL Solutions test confirmed that thermal runaway did not propagate to adjacent containers, even under extreme conditions. This achievement validates the system's robust safety design.

Sungrow, a prominent Chinese supplier of PV inverters and storage solutions, recently announced the successful completion of a large-scale fire test (LSFT) for its PowerTitan 3.0 battery energy storage system (BESS). The test, conducted by UL Solutions in China, focused on the safety performance of the system in a 20ft configuration.

The LSFT adhered to the latest requirements of UL 9540A: 2026 and CSA/ANSI C800-2025. The Fire Risk Alliance (FRA) witnessed the test, which was also observed by Jensen Hughes. The primary objective was to determine if an intentionally initiated severe thermal runaway event would spread from a burning BESS container to adjacent containers or other equipment, such as medium-voltage substations (MVS), even with fire suppression systems disabled.

The test setup accurately replicated a real-world utility-scale BESS installation, featuring 28.56 MWh of fully liquid-cooled PowerTitan 3.0 BESS units and a 7.4 MW medium-voltage substation. The batteries were at a 100% state of charge. To maximize the severity of the conditions, all active fire suppression and thermal management systems were deactivated, and the rooftop pressure-relief panels of the initiating container were fully opened to ensure maximum ventilation and oxygen availability.

The results confirmed that thermal runaway did not propagate from the initiating BESS container to any adjacent containers or the MVS. The test was continuously monitored for 7.5 hours. The peak internal temperature within the initiating container reached 1259.8°C, while the highest cell temperature in the adjacent containers remained below their thermal runaway threshold. All containers, including the one where the event was initiated, maintained structural integrity without deformation.

Roger Li, who is the general manager of the utility-scale product line at Sungrow's energy storage business unit, highlighted the importance of the test's result, explaining that its purpose was to confirm their safety design's effectiveness in extreme real-world environments. Safety features must be incorporated into the product's engineering from its initial stages. Benjamin Liu, engineering manager at UL Solutions, affirmed that the design successfully contained the fire and prevented propagation, thereby significantly reducing the potential scale of loss.

This successful demonstration underscores the robustness and safety of Sungrow's PowerTitan 3.0 BESS solution.
