Tesla Powerwalls achieve record dispatch to California grid

Home batteries in California set a new record on October 6, 2026, by collectively dispatching 745 MW to the electricity grid. Over 85,000 Tesla Powerwall owners contributed more than 600 MW to this record dispatch. This achievement surpasses the previous record by 28% and highlights the growing role of distributed energy storage in grid stability.

Home batteries in California established a new record on October 6, 2026, by collectively dispatching 745 MW to the electricity grid. This power was primarily supplied by over 85,000 Tesla Powerwall owners, who contributed more than 600 MW. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 580 MW, set less than a month earlier, by 28%.

The combined dispatch of 745 MW is significant and exceeds the capacity of most gas peaker plants in the state. Powerwalls accounted for approximately 80% of the total record dispatch. These events occurred during an October heatwave, at the request of the California Energy Commission and local utilities. The objective was to reduce peak demand and lower real-time power prices by discharging batteries during multi-hour evening peaks.

The deployment of home batteries took place through programs such as Demand Side Grid Support (DSGS) and the Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP). According to Sunrun, a key partner in these initiatives, 745 MW is sufficient to cover all households in San Francisco and San Jose combined during peak hours. Sunrun currently has over 120,000 home batteries enrolled in California grid programs.

The growth in home battery contributions to the grid is remarkable. A previous residential record of 539 MW, set on July 29, 2025, grew by 8% over more than a year to 580 MW on September 9, 2026, only to increase by 28% in just four weeks to the current record. Customers participating in these programs are compensated for their contribution to grid reliability. Mary Powell, CEO of Sunrun, noted that "customers are being compensated for helping strengthen grid reliability."

Looking ahead, plans are in place for a Google-funded distributed power plant with PG&E in the San Jose area, which will enroll nearly 21,000 devices from Tesla and Everyday Electric. Initial dispatches are expected this month. This project is part of a larger 16.8 GW virtual power plant plan for data centers, announced in June. Tesla's strength in this context lies in its large installed base and software that enables tens of thousands of homes to respond to a grid signal simultaneously.
